Rachel Walsh had a 2nd year class project at the Cardiff School of Art & Design : explain a piece of modern day technology to someone who lived and died before 1900.
“I chose to explain the Kindle to Charles Dickens because I thought it could’ve been a helpful piece of technology to have (because) he must’ve lugged a lot of heavy books around with him in his day!” Walsh designed 40 miniature books and placed them inside of a Victorian version of a portable reader - a hardcover book.
This 19th century pre-digital mock-up took over five days to finish, and each micro book is bound, covered and illustrated with the actual covers of famous classics and other Rachel "favourites" such as A Streetcar Named Desire, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Pride and Prejudice.
